 Fairbanks Ranch Residence
The owners of this home in Fairbanks Ranch wanted to change the existing
dull and unimaginative landscape into a magnificent garden full of life and
color, reminiscent of the gardens of the east coast and midwest. In
addition, the owners wanted space for a large rose garden and for
experimental gardening with annuals, perennials, and herbs. The existing
landscape was replaced with curvilinear lawn shapes, rock walls, slate
paving, a rose arbor, and garden beds.
The garden areas were planted with a variety of trees, shrubs, flowers, and
ground covers. Podocarpus, Evergreen Pear, Magnolia, Michelia, and Citrus
trees provide the main structure of the garden, while plantings of
Gardenias, Daylilies, Agapanthus, Mock Orange, Holly, Vanilla Shrub,
Arbutus, Azaleas, Geranium, and Camellias provide seasonal color. Twenty
varieties of bush and climbing roses were planted in the garden beds and on
fences and arbors. Occasional splashes of Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, and
spiky Mediterranean Fan Palm remind the owners of the garden's Southern
California setting. Photos of this project were published in San Diego
Decor & Style magazine.
