 La Jolla Residence
The gardens at this project were planned as part of an extensive remodel of
an older home in an established La Jolla neighborhood. The owners wanted
new garden spaces that looked like they might have been original. When the
owners bought the home, the landscape was an overgrown, haphazard jungle.
The new design is much more formal, picking up on the traditional lines of
the home and the owners' interest in antiques and Old World styling.
The new gardens center on a simple fountain anchored by a carved stone
dolphin imported from Italy. A parterre garden planted with seasonal color
and lined with a Boxwood hedge and a spacious lawn open off of the fountain
and its flagstone walkway. A large flagstone terrace creates an outdoor
entertainment space, which is shaded by a hip-roofed pavilion shade
structure engineered to span the between the wings of the house on a
wood-clad steel beam. A large chandelier hanging from the center of this
structure completes the outdoor room quality of the terrace. This project
was featured in San Diego Decor & Style magazine.
